The winner was:

Harri Vainio, from Lyon, France

His suggestion was: I believe the environment of small island developing states could be safeguarded if we would care more!



The second prize winner was:
Ana Strbenac, from Zagreb, Croatia

Her suggestion was: I believe the environment of small island developing states could be safeguarded if the citizens were more environmentally aware through good environmental education and public information.

First prize a seven-night holiday, second prize a four-night holiday, each for two people in Seychelles, was donated by Air Seychelles and Premier Holidays; and eight runner-up prizes of the book Deep Water, published by Ellipsis.

Entries were received by SMI, PO BOX 119, PIN GREEN, STEVENAGE, HERTFORDSHIRE SG1 4TP, UK, or sids@ourplanet.com no later than 1 December 1999.

The winner and runners up were chosen by a panel consisting of UNEP’s Executive Director, its Director of Information, and the Editor of Our Planet from the entries received. The decision of the judges is final.

This competition was closed to all those working for UNEP, GEF, Banson, Words and Publications, SMI, Air Seychelles, Premier Holidays and all other companies associated with the production of Our Planet magazine and their families.
