SMART VILLAGES
New thinking for off-grid communities worldwide

Smart Villages presents 16 essays by leading scientists and thinkers, providing policy makers, donors and development agencies concerned with rural energy access with new insights on the barriers to energy access in villages in developing countries – technological, financial and political – and explores opportunities and efforts to overcome them.

"Energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, increased social equity, and an environment that allows the world to thrive."
Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General

“The vision for smart villages is that modern energy access can act as a catalyst for development – education, health, food security, productive enterprise, clean water and sanitation, environmental sustainability and participatory democracy – which makes transformative change possible.”
Drs John Holmes and Terry van Gevelt

"Who are the poorest people in the world? Where do they live? Why are they energy poor? What are the solutions? Is a better future possible? If so, how?"
Professor Deepak Nayyar

"Access to energy, especially for rural communities, represents a central pillar of development. To date, it is estimated that around 1.3 billion people in the world have no reliable access to electricity. Without a reliable energy supply it is difficult to escape a subsistence lifestyle and poverty."
Professor AbuBakr Bahaj
